FIFA World Youth Championship

EMIRATES 2003

by Khaled Al Mazrouei (EC6)

With the FIFA World Youth Championship (WYC) being hosted in the United Arab Emirates 2003 just a few months away (March 25-April 16), the names of more than half of the 24 teams who will contest the world’s second biggest football tournament are now known following recent qualifying matches in Asia, Central and North America.

Since this event is one of the biggest in the world the United Arab Emirates wants to show the world that it is able and proud to become the one hosting this event.

Preparations to the WYC 2003 started about 2 years ago starting from maintaining stadiums around the UAE and ending at organizing the main event.

Five students where chosen by Al Ain Men’s College to volunteer in organizing a press conference (seminar)  inviting CEOs and presidents of all the main companies in the UAE to attend. The purpose of this seminar is to inform these companies about the WYC and what is their role in this event. This event occurred in the Intercontinental Hotel Al-Ain  on the 22nd December 2002.

The students that were chosen were Khaled Al Mazrouei, Mahmoud Al Alaawi, Hussain Sediq, Jasem Mohammed Abdulfattah Ismal and Al Nukhaira Naser. These students are from the E-commerce program and the Student Council of Al Ain Men’s College.

Our first mission was to meet with some people from Al Ain club and decide the steps of what we are going to do and our responsibilities in the seminar. The thing that helped us the most was attending all those E-commerce field visits, presentations  and seminars in Dubai, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. We learnt the importance of meetings, time and project management and why planning is so vital. Some of these great ideas that we saw in these  past seminars were implemented in the WYC Emirates 2003 informative seminar.

Our main responsibility was to send invitations to CEO’s and presidents of as many companies in the UAE as possible. About 100 companies were invited, so we had to fax and check on every single company to see if they got the invitation or if we had to send the invitation again. Distribution of work within the team was necessary to save time and effort.

We learnt such delegation and project management skills and it’s importance from our Ecommerce studies. We also learnt about the importance of planning as well and why it is necessary to plan for such an event in advance.

A week prior to the seminar, meetings and workshops were held every single day to make sure that we didn’t miss any little detail. We had to print posters of the WYC 2003 and display them next to where cameras are going to be flashing. We even had to arrange the seats and the stage.

On the day of the seminar we arrived at about 8:00 am to make our last check and have our last meeting with each other so we could decide who has to be where. So we decided that 2 students should be welcoming visitors and guide them to the hall and 2 students standing at the reception to make sure that all companies register for our statistic needs and the last student was the MC of the event.

At the end of the day we were thanked by Al Ain club for the great accomplishment, they also asked us if we could help them in upcoming events and some of us were chosen to be in the media committee of the WYC Emirates 2003 Al Ain Group.

This event was the first that we ever organized and for what we went through and accomplished was a great experience for all of us.

Staying up until 2:00 am every night trying to make this event as good as possible taught us that we should be informed about our responsibilities at least 2 weeks prior to the seminar not five days. If I had to organize another seminar I don’t think I would change a thing
